This research project aimed to study, by examining Brazilian, North-American and international literature, the criticisms that apply to the main editorial rankings of law schools in Brazil and in the United States: the RUF and the USNWR. The goal is, once the aspects that give power and influence to these rankings have been exposed, to map out the advantages and disadvantages of implementing this tool in the evaluation of higher education institutions. These rankings, both criticized in the academic sphere, have similar problems which lead to the conclusion that their effects are undesirable and harmful to academia. The conclusion was that the research hypothesis was valid, with considerable similarities between the criticisms applicable to the objects of analysis, both in terms of methodological flaws and the negative influence on the institutional environment and decision-making.
