Compared to developing and developed countries, Brazil has a lower level of productivity that has been declining in recent years. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze how Brazil spends public and private resources on research and development (R&D), as these investments are crucial for improving productivity. For Brazil to be able to converge to the per capita income of developed countries, it is necessary to optimize R&D spending. We map the qualitative and quantitative physiognomy of public spending on R&D by the Brazilian government compared to OECD member countries. From this comparison, we identify patterns of effective investment in this sector and contrast with the Brazilian status quo.
